We booked a tour to Los Haitises National Park two days in advance to take place on our last day at Las Terrenas. We reluctantly paid in cash the equivalent of US$160, as Arena Tours does not take credit cards. We asked for a receipt, which consists of a piece of paper unnumbered, sign of an under the table cash "business." The day of the tour, we dutifully waited 10 minutes before pick up time, which was 8 am. By 8:15 nobody had materialized, so we asked the hotel to call Arena Tours. No answer and no voice mail set up. We then called ourselves about 8 times, with the same result. We sent written messages with WhatsApp, and received no answer. At 9:00 am we finally found a taxi and made our way to the agency and asked what was going on. Isabelle called her husband, Alain. He said he had forgotten to pick us up. We asked how that was possible, and why nobody, including her, had not answered our calls and messages. Isabelle said that her phone rings into her husband's (??!!), and so on, and so forth, the most bizarre explanations we ever heard. We were lucky to get our money back. Isabelle did not offer any compensation, as it is not part of the "C'est la vie" business model, despite knowing that this was our last day and we could not take the excursion another day. Even their business card has misspellings: The address should read Calle Principal, not principale, and the town is called Las Terrenas, not las Terenas. And we are still waiting for Alain's apology for not picking us up and not answering the phone. C'est la vie!
